Job Interview Secrets: How Not To Be Daunted
If you’re daunted by the prospect of attending a job interview, welcome to the club. We’ve all been there at some point of time or the other.
Of course, this doesn’t apply to those people who have a trust fund set up for them by their parents or relatives, but then how many of these lucky people are there?
Just a handful of people; and if you’re not in that club, then it’s time to think about why you do feel daunted by a job interview, and take steps to overcome fear and doubt and so on and so forth.
Of course, there are reasons why people are daunted and most of them stem from the fact that they are going to be judged by an authority figure.
Also, people are usually not used to selling themselves even though it’s a known fact that ‘selling yourself’ doesn’t have to be related to business.
Think about it: both these aspects of taking an interview are things that you’ve done your whole life.
As a student, you’ve had teachers and parents monitor your progress and if you wanted that new bicycle, you’d no doubt have to sell yourself to your parents for that.
But then again, since the pressure of success, as an adult, always hangs over one’s head, and this causes unnecessary nerves, which in some cases, leads to failure.
Apart from the more personal reasons discussed, the reasons for this lack of self-belief could be because you might struggle with communication, not have the necessary qualifications or experience for the job in question.
Interviewers often find people who talk too much or too little to be suspect but most of all they do not trust people who do not seem to be themselves.
As for qualifications or experience, you must remember that there are certain skills or strengths that might have landed you the interview in the first place, and which is what you must work towards emphasizing in the interview.
In the case of a new job, there’s good reason for being a bit fearful of what might be asked by the employer and how it can be made relevant to the job that you and other applicants are looking to secure.
What you have to make sure is that you prepare well for the interview by doing research about the job as well as getting your documents in order too. Making a checklist of these items will help you to cover what is needed to do well at the interview.
No matter what, just remember that nerves are good for any ‘performance’ – just don’t let it break you down. And for this, preparation is the key.
